Spencer Levi Alexander, the 7th child of Peter Pine and Eliza (McClure) Alexander, was born July 15, 1855 while the Alexander Family was leaving at the McClure settlement in New York. In March 1856, when Spencer was 9-months old, the family moved to Wisconsin, eventually settling in Viroqua the Kickapoo River.
In 1880 or 1881, after being hit with the "Go West, young man fever" Spencer left Wisconsin and headed west. He was in Colorado in December 1881 when his father, Peter Pine Alexander died. By August 1883, Spencer was in Montana and by 1885, he had made it to Badger, Douglas County, Washington Territory.
He married Ella Grace Patrick May 16, 1888 in Spokane Falls, Washington Territory. Together, Spencer and Ella had 5 sons, Nelson, Herbert, Levi, Arthur, and Ralph, and one daughter, Lila Helen, who died of scarlet fever. Lila was less than 2 years old when she died.
Unfortunately, after Lila's death, Spencer and Ella's marriage started to disintegrate and ended in divorce by mutual consent.
Shortly before his death, Spencer returned to Colorado. According to Spencer's obituary, "Spencer Levi Alexander died Dec. 14, 1924, at Colorado Springs, Colo. (age 69) in the Union Printers' Home. He was a pioneer, printer and newspaperman of the state of Washington. He learned the trade in Mason City, Iowa, in 1873. He came to Spokane in 1883 and owned and operated newspapers all over the Northwest."
