When the Lahaina Restoration Foundation was restructuring the Seaman's Hospital in the 80's, they discovered a human skeleton under the northeast pillar of the building. In ancient times, when an ali'i had a building constructed to house the royal family, a commoner would be put to death. The victim would then be buried under the northeast support of the structure so that his spirit would be bound to the house and become the "Permanent Guardian". The bones have been left as they were found, guarding the Hospital forevermore.
