The obituary for David's first wife, Mary Ellen Couillard, indicates that they married in Wisconsin in 1872. It states that they had seven children, of which the names of five are known: sons Thomas, Charles, and George, and daughters Lillian (Rochow) and Etta "Hattie" (Tryon/Andrus).
Another source states that David and Mary Ellen were the parents of eight children: Thomas (1874), James (1875), Nellie, Minnie (1882), Lilly (1886), Hattie (1888), Charles (1889) and George(1891). All the children, with the exception of Nellie, appear with their father in an 1894 Michigan State census.
The union of Mary Ellen Couillard and David Carey was dissolved--officially or unofficially--between 1892 & 1894. It is speculated that Mary Ellen became involved with David's bookkeeper, Neal McKinnon (unknown when), and may or may not have officially married him. The children remained in their father's care.
David was a logger by trade, shipping his logs from Carey's Spur north to the Sagola Sawmill.

Mary Ellen's obituary falsely states that David "preceded her in death many years ago." David married his second wife, Norah O'Regan, in 1899 in Mississippi Co., Missouri. They had David Joseph Carey (burial place not noted on his death certificate) and twins James and Joseph; the three children did not survive to adulthood. Norah died in 1906. David then married her sister, Mary "Mollie" O'Regan Maxfield, 24 Oct 1907 in Alexander Co., Illinois. [Preceding paragraph submitted by memorial manager, FaG member # 47035119, 11 Sep 2020].
