Mary was born in a two room log cabin in Hibbard, Idaho. The family moved to Burton shortly after. Hibbard and Burton are two small communities west of Rexburg.
Mary's parents were immigrants from Germany who came to Idaho after converting to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mary was the youngest daughter of a family of nine children. She has three younger brothers, two older brothers and three older sisters.
Mary spent most her young life in Burton. She attended Burton Elementary and Madison High School. During her high school years she was in the school Glee Club, loved drama, and was a cheer leader. Mary loved to sew and was known to come home after school and sew a dress to wear that evening.
Mary met a boy from Rigby, Idaho. She married Arnel Robert Summers on October 30, 1936 and was sealed to him in the Salt Lake Temple. They were married during the Great Depression, but considered those years as the happiest of their lives.
During their marriage, Arnel and Mary moved several times and felt they had bettered their lives with each move. They spent one year in a two room house east of Rigby. Then they moved further east of Rigby to a small farm. Next they moved to the Summers family home east of Rigby. In 1952 they sold their home and moved to Ammon, Idaho, buying a home there. They became parents to five children: Geraldine Miriam, Sharon Mary, Robert Arnel, Shelia Ann, and Stephen James.
Mary was a patient person. She was always smiling and happy. She had a disposition and personality that everyone liked to be around. She was loyal to her husband and proud of his outstanding work in the scouting program. She received three Eagle Scout pins for the work her husband and sons completed. Her husband received the Silver Beaver award.
Mary had a testimony of the truthfulness of the Gospel. She was active in church duties. She worked in the Relief Society as a visiting teacher, she taught Sunday School and Primary, and also served as a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts.
Mary had hobbies and loved to sing. She sang with the Singing Mothers. She spent many hours in her garden.
Mary had happy moments with her children (Robert served a mission in Chile) and she also had sorrow. Shelia died at thirteen. Shortly after Shelia's death Mary showed the first signs of Multiple Sclerosis. She accepted her suffering with patience. She passed in her sleep.
