James Preble was 24, single, and a farmer in Whitefield ME when he enlisted 4 Jan 1864 in Co. E, 2nd Maine Cavalry. He was mustered in 19 Jan for 3 years; honorably discharged 21 Oct 1865. [From Soldiers Index card at Maine State Archives.]

James Preble, who died recently in Togus, was a highly respected resident of Whitefield, where he had resided for many years. He was 79 years of age and a veteran of the Civil War. Previous to the war he followed the sea. His grandfather was a soldier of the Revolutionary War and his father a soldier in the War of 1812. [Contributor: Whitefield Historical Society #47663682]
