Mrs. Ruth Foster Thornton, age 70, of Florence, passed away Thursday December 1, 2011, at ECM Hospital following a brief illness. Visitation will be 5pm until 7pm Sunday December 4 at St. Michael Catholic Church with recitation of the Rosary at 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 am Monday December 5, at St. Michael with Rev. Edward Markley, OSB, officiating. The eulogy will be given by Chaplain David Thornton, US Army, Afghanistan. A private burial will be at a later date in St. Michael Cemetery.
Ruth was born in Lauderdale Co. and a member of St. Michael Catholic Church. She attended St. Florian School, Rogers High School and then transferred to and graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Cullman, was a member of the board of directors of the Buffler House and was a supporter of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and The Cerebral Palsy Center. She was a sales clerk and her last employment was at Belks.
Preceding her in death were her son, Joey Thornton; parents, Frank Joseph and Emma Ricker Foster; twin brother, Ralph Foster and sister, Joan Walker. She is survived by her husband, Tom Thornton; sons, Tim Thornton, Rogersville and Shannon Thornton, Florence; daughters-in-law, Suzy Thornton, Florence, Marsha Thornton, Rogersville and Renee Thornton, Florence; brothers, Paul Foster, Florence and Frank Foster, Apex, NC; sisters, Mary Ann Sparkman, Garner, NC and Kate Huerta, St. Clair, MO; grandchildren, Kyler Thornton, Rogersville, Taylor Thornton, Rogersville, Case Thornton, Rogersville, Kristen Alvarez, Florence, Anna Thornton, Florence and Foster Thornton, Florence; great-grandchild, Tanner Purser, Florence; and her beloved puppy dog, Bud.
We, the family, wish to express our heart felt thanks and gratitude to our many friends for their love and support, calls and visits during Ruth's illness. Also, there is a special place in our heart for Dr. W. J. Connolly, III and Dr. Matthew A. Connolly for the care they have been giving "Bud" during this time and for bringing "Bud" to the hospital one last time on Wednesday to see his Momma.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Ruth's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or The Cerebral Palsy Center.
