Herman Burkett, 81, of Anderson, passed away December 7, 2011 at Community Hospital in Anderson after an extended illness.


He was born February 20, 1930 in Wilmington, DE, the son of the late Joseph and Jesse (Haughey) Burkett. He retired after 20 years from the US Army as Sergeant 1st Class, serving one tour in Vietnam from 1965-1966. Herman also retired from Anderson Community School as a teacher and later retired from Burkett Builders, LLC.


He was a member of the Lions Club, Masonic Lodge and enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling.


He is survived by his wife, Paula (Wiedenhofer) Burkett of Anderson, whom he married January 5, 1952; sons, Michael P. (wife, Sheree) Burkett and Robert G. Burkett; eight grandchildren, Michael Burkett, Emily McGovern, Aaron Burkett, Benjamin Case, Melissa Young, Justin Voos, Paula Swafford and Jonathon Voos; 17 great grandchildren; brothers, Joseph Burkett and Lee Burkett; and sisters, Charlotte Burkett, Ellen Sobieski, Caroline Bogia and Sandy Burkett.


He was preceded in death by his daughters, Theresa Voos and Patricia Case; sisters, Jackie Woods and Janet Pierce; brothers, Robert Burkett and Milton Burkett; sister-in-law, Maria Theresia Max; and special aunt and uncle, Cecelia and Biazzi Casper.


Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, December 16th, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Robert Williams officiating. Burial will be at East Maplewood Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 266.


Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home.
