Married Eliza Barksdale Oct 15, 1855 at Halifax
Captain in the Brooklyn Grays-Co.E, 23rd Virginia Infantry. CSA Halifax County, VA.
William enlisted as a Captain on May 7th 1861, at Brooklyn for one year. William commanded Company E, until he was captured July 13, 1861, and dropped from roll of Commissioned Officers at reorganization April 21, 1862.
Captain Haymes & brother-in-law, Beverly Barksdale III, operated the Brooklyn Store & Post Office from 1867 until 1883.
Early in 1880, Captain Haymes & his brother-in-law, Beverly Barksdale III, reopened the Brooklyn Tobacco Factory. They expanded the manufacturing of plug tobacco and added snuff and smoking tobacco. The factory closed in 1881.
Captain Haymes purchased the Melrose Academy at Brooklyn on Jan 24, 1883 and opened it as a store. William knew that a post office would be excellant for his new business, as a post office was usually the hub of activity in any community. Folks would come to get their mail, catch up on local news, and buy their needed goods in the store. With this thought in mind, William applied to the post office department to have a post office established in his store.
Captain Haymes wanted to name the post office-Melrose because of the history of the building. There was already a Melrose in Virginia so he had to select another name. He chose, Elmo, which is said to be derived from Melrose; he was not to be completely outdone. Needless to say, there was not another Elmo in Virginia or anywhere else and that name was accepted.
The Elmo Post Office was established effective September 18, 1883 and continued to operate until January 31, 1910. Captain Haymes was the only postmaster.
