Patrick spent his boyhood in Elfros where he attended Elfros schools.
On 2 February 1942 he joined the Canadian Army. He served in England, Holland, France, and, Germany until his discharge in February 1946.
In 1947 he had land from the Veteran Land Act in the Carrot River Valley in Saskatchewan consisting of half a section. During the winters he worked in the bush country of Northern Ontario in the Fort Francis area. Then for four years worked at oping-pit mining {drilling through ice} at Atikoken in Northern Ontario.
In 1951 he worked in the bush at Prince George and Willow River area of British Columbia until 1952.
In 1952 he started long shoring at Vancouver, British Columbia and remained in that occupation.
