"LAST RITES HELD FOR CHARLEY HARLAN

This afternoon the business houses of St. John are closing for an hour, from 2:30 to 3:30, hour of the funeral when last rites performed for Charley Harlan, honored business citizen here during the past sixty years. He is remembered by perhaps as many of the people of this city as any man who has lived here during any part of that long period time, for Charley had a natural bent for making friends while serving the public.

His life span of 81 years, 3 months and 2 days, extended from his birth January 8, 1862 at Urbana, Illinois to last Saturday morning at 8 o'clock when at his home he peacefully passed away.

He was generous of spirit and a voluntary promoter of every worthy enterprise in St. John since 1884, the year in which he first engaged in business here. This trait remained a part of his makeup and through the years identified him with practically every public project advancement and major entertainment feature attempted for this city and community.

Though weight of years has brought him low he has come to the end of his business career — head of one of our leading firms, the C. R. Harlan Co.

Many friends mourn his passing and bid peace to his ashes." END
