William Herman, father of Billy Herman, former National League baseball star and now a coach of the Brooklyn Dodgers, died at 3 a.m. yesterday at his home on Grant Line Road near New Albany. He was 83. The elder Herman was a sand-lot baseball player of note in the New Albany area in his early years and did much to encourage his son to make his mark in the major leagues. He retired in 1925 after 30 years with the Hoosier Panel Company as a woodworker.
