"Joe" was a farmer who was born in Illischestie, Bukovina, Austria. His surname when he was born was Ast. His parents were Jacob Ast and Katharina Wendling. He emigrated to the United States in the late 1880's, along with other family members. Sometime after their arrival, they changed their family name from Ast to Aust as it was always being mispronounced. On October 8, 1892, he married Christine Caroline Walz at the Ellis County Court House in Hays, KS. The couple had 11 children:
Frank Joseph, Minnie Rose, Bertha Myree, William Albert, Oscar Ernest, Joseph Henry, Edgar Clifford, John Frederick, Cora Caroline Mabel, Katherine Marie, and Betty Jeanne.
