Josiah Cowan York's mother was 'Ailsey' - no surname found and this is proven through the approved pension application for his father, Captain William York, found in The Library of Congress. Josiah was the only living son when the pension was approved and both Ailsey and William deceased. According to the 1880 census, both were born in Virginia per their daughter, Elizabeth York Philpot, otherwise we have no further information.
