Alfred Childs was born near Germantown, the son of Joseph & Hannah Childs. In 1860, he was a mason living in Cheltenham, Montgomery County, and stood 5' 10" tall with brown hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Cheltenham August 6, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 11 as a private with Co. C, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry, a regiment that saw heavy action as Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. He was honorably discharged with his company on May 21, 1863.

He married Mary Mazie Taylor April 11, 1866, in Philadelphia and fathered Lavenia (b. 07/21/68) and John Alfred (b. 04/08/76). Death was due to typhoid fever.
