Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Sergeant in Company E, 43rd New York Infantry, Union Army. On April 2, 1865, in actions at Petersburg, Virginia, he captured a Confederate field flag marker and a Confederate flag. For heroism, he was awarded the Medal of Honor and later achieved the rank of First Lieutenant.
