Son of William Henry Bell and Frances Venabable (Scott) Bell.

He married (1) Charlotte Ingram Witherspoon on June 26, 1894 in Kentucky. In 1895, they sailed for Korea as missionaries for the Executive Committee of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.

Together they were the parents of Henry Venable Bell and Charlotte Witherspoon (Bell) Linton. Lottie died in 1901.

Married (2) Margaret Bull on May 10, 1904. Together they were the parents of Eugene Bell Holland Scott Bell, and William Ford Bell. Margaret died in 1919.

Married (3) Julia Dysart on Sept. 15, 1921.
