Stephen was a son of Simeon & Freelove (Merritt) Losee. He may have been born near Greenwich, CT or in Dutchess County, NY. In 1790 he moved with his parents, brother Hiram, and sisters Elizabeth and Sarah "Sally" to Greenville, NY, where his father founded and operated a sawmill on the Losee Creek. On September 1, 1800, Stephen married Rachel L. King, daughter of Obadiah (II) & Abigail (Rundle) King.

Stephen and Rachel had 13 children: David S., Hiram S., Samuel, Jacob, Electia C., Ransom, Roswell, Abigail, Stephen Alanson, Charles Stewart, Charlotte, James A., and Rebecca L. Their son Samuel's son David S. Losee was this contributor's great grandfather.
