The only veteran of both the Mexican & Civil Wars living in Indiana County, died at the home of his son,William Pifer,
in Rochester Mills on Saturday. He was 89 years of age.

At the age of 19 years,he was living in the small town of Columbia near Harrisburg,on the Susquehanna River. When

raised a company of 115 men to replenish the ranks of the Virginia Regiment,Conrad Pifer enlisted.

After much time drilling with the company, they embarked on a 36 day journey to Vera Cruz;during which time,18 members of the company died. He marched to Mexico City, with engagements in Cerra Gorda,Chapultepee.
Following that 2 year campaign, the company returned to the States via ship to the mouth of the Mississippi River to Fort Monroe, then on to Columbia, where he learned that of the company of 115 men that had enlisted with him in Columbia, only 17 remained alive to tell the tale.

During the Civil War,he enlisted in Co. D,135th Regt. PVI, under Capt. J.G. Wilson of Jefferson County,Pa. and Col. J.R. Porter of Indiana,Pa.
He fought with his regiment at Chancellorsville in 1863 and on 24 May 1863,he was honorably discharged.
