Antti Lamberg was born in Sinilä in Finland's Karelia region to Daniel (Tanali) and Anna Pulkkanen Lamberg. He arrived in Portland, Maine with his mother and three of his siblings aboard the SS Numidian in January of 1901. They traveled to Michigan's Copper Country, where Daniel had already established himself as a homesteader in the growing town of Toivola. Antti anglicized his name to Andrew upon arrival in the United States.
On July 21, 1901, he married Loviisa Ervasti in Calumet, Michigan. The couple had at least seven, and possibly eight, children before Loviisa's death in 1935.
