Emil Johannes Lamberg was born in Sinilä in Finland's Karelia region to Daniel (Taneli) and Anna Pulkkanen Lamberg. He was the youngest of five children.

On January 31, 1901, Emil arrived in the United States aboard the SS Numidian. After debarking in Portland, Maine, the family traveled to Michigan's Copper Country, where Daniel had established himself as a homesteader in the budding town at Toivola.

Emil appears to have died a bachelor. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Aleksanter, and sister Juuetta. His brother Antti (Andrew) and sister Helena Kauppi survived him.
