Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a First Lieutentant in the Union Army. He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a Sergeant in Company H, 97th New York Infantry for action on May 6, 1864 at Wilderness Campaign, Virginia. His citation reads "At the risk of his own life, Burk went back while the rebels were still firing and, finding Col. Wheelock unable to move, alone and unaided, carried him off the field of battle."
