Charles Glendon How, Jr.
(11 September 1936 - 27 December 2011)

Charles Glendon How, Jr., age 75, passed away December 27, 2011 at St. John's Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.

Charles was born September 11, 1936 to Charles and Neva (Mason) How in Portales, New Mexico.

The Hows moved to Baxter Springs, Kansas in 1948.

He graduated from Baxter Springs High School and served in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1957 primarily aboard the U.S.S. Bennington aircraft carrier.

Survivors include his daughters Mary (Carl) Ice of Westlake, Texas and Michelle (Robert) Larson of Chanute, Kansas, grandchildren Marshall (Megan) Ice of Arkansas City, Kansas, Karen Ice of Barrington, Illinois, Melanie Miller of Dodge City, Kansas, Sarah (Ryan) Karami Mullins of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Laura (Brian) Schnedler of Chanute and step granddaugther Catrina Larson of Pittsburg, Kansas. Charles had two great grandsons, Caden Miller and Joshuah Schnedler and two step great granddaugthers, Madison Duran and Ashley Larson.

Charles parents preceded him in death.

Additional survivors are sisters Beverly Blake and Rosemary How of Baxter Springs, a brother Stan (Sheila) How of Springdale, Arkansas and many nieces and nephews.

Following his service in the Navy, Charles was employed by Yellow Freight, was the owner of a furniture store and a furniture manufacturer's representative for more than 30 years.

He served on the Baxter Springs City Council and was a member of the Lion's Club.

Charles always had time to lend a helping hand, even to strangers, or to share an encouraging word. He was known for his great sense of humor and love of the outdoors. His legacy will be that he loved God, his family and his country.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday December 30, 2011 at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel, Baxter Springs, KS. Rev. Jimmy Beggs will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Baxter Springs Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening.

Memorials may be made to Pastoral Care, C/O St. John's Hospital 2727 McClelland Blvd, Joplin, MO 64804.

Note: The Hows moved to Baxter from Galena, KS. I started to Spring Grove School in 1945 with Beverly. We had Mrs. Mildred Parkes as our teacher. In second grade we had Miss Nadine Gandy.
