The "Mrs. Joshua Hobart" interred here is the second wife of the Rev. Joshua Hobart, second pastor of the Puritan congregation of Southold, Long Island. According to the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Volume 50, the second Mrs. Joshua Hobart was born Mary Sunderland c. March 5, 1642, the daughter of John and Dorothy Sunderland of colonial Massachusetts, and in November 1656 became the bride of Jonathan Rainsford. Another source gives her birth year as c.1635, so she was either 14 or 21 years old at the time of her first marriage, which ended with Rainsford's death in Barbadoes in March 1671. She did not remain a widow for long, and shortly afterwards wed the Rev. Hobart, whose brief, childless first marriage had ended with the death of his wife some four years earlier, also in Barbadoes. Six children were born of this second marriage, however, the first in October 1672, and the last a decade later. Mrs. Hobart died in April 1698, a month after her 56th (or 63rd) birthday. Her grave is marked by a slate, ledger-style stone that was probably carved in England. The Rev. Hobart, who survived her by some 18 years, died in 1716-17.
