Danish dancer and teacher born in Copenhagen. She studied at the Royal Danish Ballet School with Harold Lander and later studied in London and Paris. In 1938 she joined the Royal Danish Ballet and was a soloist with them from 1942-1962. She created many roles including Lander's 'The Land of Milk and Honey' in 1942, 'Quasi una fantasia' in 1945, Ralov's 'Passiones' in 1944, Larsen's 'Sylvia' in 1948, 'Desire' in 1952, 'Capricious Luncinda' in 1954 and 'Vision' in 1957. Most importantly she created Juliet in Ashton's 'Romeo and Juliet' in 1955 and the title role in 'Moon Reindeer' by Cullberg in 1957. She was co-director with her former husband, Frank Schaufuss, of the Danish Ballet Academy and its associated performing group Danish Bsllet Theatre until it was disbanded in 1974. She choreographed two works in 1953, 'Spectrum' for the Royal Danish Ballet and 'A Note Page'. She also staged two Bournonville ballets: 'Conservatoire' for London Festival Ballet in 1973 and 'La Sylphide' for the Stuttgart Ballet in 1982. She worked as a guest teacher with other companies including the Royal Ballet School. She is the mother of dancer Peter Schaufuss.
