Mrs. Leta "Lettie" Gilmer Fisher

LAFAYETTE – A Celebration of Life gathering will be held Friday, January 13, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Fountain Memorial Funeral Home in Lafayette for Mrs. Leta Gilmer Fisher, 81, who passed away peacefully after a long, full and happy life on December 25, 2011 at Cornerstone Village South nursing home in Lafayette where she resided for the past two years.
Leta was born April 16, 1930 in Gilmer Hollow, TN and was one of four children raised on a family farm in what she called "God's Country", a place she loved dearly all of her life. Leta was a good student and played basketball in high school but her real talent was music. Blessed with perfect pitch, she played multiple instruments, primarily piano and organ but also the accordion, guitar and a bit of fiddle.
A devout Methodist, Leta loved to perform in church choirs and played the organ for Lobelville Methodist Church for many years. In the 1960's, she toured churches across middle and western Tennessee as part of an all-women's gospel trio, singing alto. But Leta's favorite trio was the one in which she performed with her sisters, who survive her: Jean Greenwood, 85, of Dickson and Johnnia Clark, 73, of Lobelville. Their spontaneous concerts in the kitchen and around the family piano included pop and country classics from the ‘40s and ‘50s as well as Christmas carols and favorite hymns. Leta, a devoted wife and mother, also loved to cook, sew, crochet and volunteer in her church and community.
After attending Nashville Business College and working for two years in Nashville, Leta was married for 59 years to Hugh Edward Fisher, also now a resident of Lafayette, LA, whose career with Tennessee Gas carried the couple and their family to communities all along the pipeline, including Lafayette and Houston. They had four children: Cherry Fisher May and John Hugh Fisher, both of Lafayette, LA, Michelle Fisher Wenger, of Southaven, MS and Shawn Gilmer Fisher, of Las Vegas, NV.
In addition to her husband, sisters and children, Leta is survived by her son-in-law Steve May and two daughters-in-law, Brenda and Julie Fisher; ten grandchildren, including Chris, Natalee, Joshua and Ryan Fisher and Morgan, Bailey and Carter Wenger, Emma May and Brannon May and his wife, the former Nicole Brandt and Erin May Fitzgerald; and six great-grandchildren, Brenna, Zachary and Tyler May and Taggert, Lily and Alexander Fitzgerald.
Leta was preceded in death by her parents, John Samuel Gilmer and the former Kate Leota Morrison; and her brother Joe Gilmer and his infant twin.
In Tennessee, visitation will be observed at McDonald's Funeral Home in Lobelville on Friday, December 30, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. until time of graveside services.
The graveside service for Leta will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 30, 2011 in her family's cemetery, Gilmer Cemetery in Lobelville, near her place of birth.
