The daughter of Elizabeth and Nicolas Wetzel, Kate was born in the French portion of Alsace-Lorraine. She and Martin Delany were married on 29 Dec 1870 in St. Patrick's Church in Waukegan, Lake County, Illinois. After his father's death in 1893, Martin chose to use the french spelling of Delany DeLany. An attorney Martin served in the State Government, as Senator His brother Patrick served in the House of Representatives. Martin and Katie had five children, 3 daughters, Emma, Mary, and Eleanor, and, 2 sons, Clarence Martin and Russell Wetzel
