Nels Backstrom married Charity Adelaide Smith in North Dakota. They had six of their 11 children in North Dakota before they came to homestead in Ransom, Alberta in 1903. She died when her youngest daughter was only three.

Adda traces her heritage back to the Babcocks, Clarkes, Davies and Crandells who settled Rhode Island in the mid 1600's. she also has several ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War. Making her eligable for membership in the DAR.
