US Congressman. He was born one of eight children in Tannadice, Angus, Scotland, to Alexander Machir and his wife Mary Ann Keller Machir on April 17, 1764. His family later immigrated to the United States. He was educated locally and later decided to enter politics. During the American Revolutionary War, he served his country as an officer. He was first elected and served a term in the Virginia State House of Delegates from 1793 to 1796. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected. A Member of the Federalist Party, he then served Virginia as an At-Large Delegate (Fifth Congress), in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1797, to March 3, 1799. After his term in the United States Congress expired he was succeeded in office by United States Representative George Jackson on March 4, 1799. He lastly was elected and served two more terms in the Virginia State House of Delegates from 1811 to 1813, and again from 1818 to 1821. He then left public service and spent his final years in retirement. He passed away in Hardy, Bedford County, Virginia, on June 25, 1827, at the age of 53, and was buried in Wilson Cemetery in Hardy County, West Virginia. He was married to Rebecca Inskeep on September 18, 1790, and the couple would have twelve children together. His wife Rebecca passed away on November 17, 1841, at the age of 70, and she was buried with her husband in the Wilson Cemetery in Hardy County, Virginia.
