Walter Brown was born around 1737 in County Antrim, Ireland to Scotch-Irish Presbyterians.

On October 2, 1767 Walter with his wife, the former Miss Margaret McQuiston and son, John, boarded the ship "The Earl of Donegal" sailing out of Belfast harbor for America. They were part Rev. William Knox's congregation who were granted land in the back-country of the Carolinas. The crossing took 81 day, arriving in Charlestown harbor on the 22nd of December. Walter was granted 200 acres on the head waters of Rocky Creek in Craven County, later to be part of Chester County, South Carolina. Here Walter and his family joined the Fishing Creek Presbyterian congregation where Walter served as a "ruling Elder" the rest of his life. Over the years Walter and Margaret had three more children.

During the American Revolution, Walter and his family were much affected by the skirmishes around their Chester home. Several times they were raided and robbed of all their possessions. Walter's daughter, Jane, now married to Joseph Gaston has been well documented for her heroism. And his son, John enlisted under the command of Captain John McClure.

At the time of Walter Brown's death in 1826, he had become a large land owner and able to leave a sizable estate per his Last Will and Testament that was probated in Chester County on the 2nd of October 1826.
