John was born, Johannis, in Sweden and moved to Minnesota in 1865 with his parents. He later moved to North Dakota and married Ricca Jacobson. Ricca passed about the time the family moved to the Stettler Alberta area. He married his second wife in Stettler.
They homesteaded in the Ransom area west of Stettler. John and Nels built the Swedish Lutheran Church in Stettler, the Ransom School (currently at the Stettler Museum) and the roundabout in Big Valley.
