Dr. Lester was born May 23, 1836 near the village of Genoa in Cayuga county. His schooling was obtained at the high school in that village.
When about 18 years of age he became a school teacher and taught in one of the district schools near his home village for three years, after which he went to Kansas with a party of settlers, most of whom returned in about one year, Mr. Lester being among those who came back.
Studied In New York.
While on what was at that time the frontier, the young man was convinced that he wanted to become a doctor, so, upon his return, he made arrangements to study under Dr. Cyrus Powers of Moravia. After two years he entered the New York College of Physicians and spent one year there, when he enlisted in the medical corps of the regular army August 5, 1861.
His first surgery and medical practice began in a hospital established in Alexandria about the time of the first Battle of Bull Run. After five months in Alexandria, Dr. Lester was sent to Fortress Monroe, where he completed a year in the service and then resigned.
Dr. Lester went back to New York, where he studied until l863 when he re-enlisted and was made assistant surgeon in the 14th New York regiment of calvary. He saw much service and rose rapidly until 1864 when he resigned from the service a second time. He held the rank of Brigadier-Surgeon. Upon his return here he was married to Miss Caroline Foote whose home was in Venice.
They met in Saratoga County where Dr. Lester practiced for one year before coming to this village and purchasing the practice of Dr. Franklin H. Seeley. For over half a century, Dr. Lester had been one of the leading physcians. For years his counsel on cares of a surgical nature had been sought by his fellow practioners.
VISITED MANY COUNTRIES
Dr. Lester is the oldest member of the Seneca County Medical Society which he joined in 1866. He was president of the organization and in 1894 was sent to Berlin as a delegate to the International Medical Congress representing the national society of this country.
Several times since then Dr. Lester has visited various parts of Europe and all parts of North and South America. He had retired somewhat from active practice the last few years, but still maintained an office at his residence in Cayuga street. He is a member of Cross post G. A. R., and had been re-elected surgeon of the post continuously for many years.
He leaves one sister, Miss Harriet Mann of Gilmore City, Iowa; one daughter, Miss Caroline Lester of Seneca Falls, and two sons, Dr. Frederick W. Lester of this village and George B Lester of New York city. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock from his late home in Cayuga street. Rev. Robert D. Merrill, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, officiating. Burial will be made in Restvale Cemetery.
