1962, April 22 - Cedar Rapids Gazette - "Iowa Main Street - Central City"

Central City - Some historians claim...... Steep banks confining the Waspsipinicon river on its course through town provided an easily developed source of water power, which induced William St John and John Peet to collaborate in constructing a dam. As soon as the dam was completed, in 1856, Peet built a sawmill on the west side; however, introduction of commercially finished pine lumber reduced profits to such an extent that the industry was discontinued......The first gristmill. a partnership venture by William St John and John Peet, erected in 1859 on the east side of the river, utilized power from the existing dam. Cost of construction was $7,000. Ownership changes several times. The last proprietor T J Liddington, was killed in an accident at the mill, and in 1912-13 the structure was razed.
