1864, Sep 8 - The Cedar Valley Time, Cedar Rapids, IA

A Copperhead bully at Quasqueton, Linn county, proposed to drink to the health of Jeff. Davis. Truman Peet, an old settler in this Township, who happened to be present, and who, as everybody knows, is a true blue Union man and who thoroughly despises and opposes Copperheads and Copperhead principles, requested the bully to stand aside and not insult Union men with such remarks. Cop made some reply and was immediately " histed by one of Mr Peet's Union "supporters " and who was in a fair way to give him a most thorough and well-deserved drubbing, when a son of the Cop attacked Mr Peet from behind and brutally attempted to gouge out his eyes. The by-standers then interfered and the fracas was stopped. - Anamosa Eureka
