Son of George Ravenscroft Claiborne and Anna Robinson Claiborne. His father brought the family to Nashville, Tennessee in 1820, and by 1830 they had settled in Gibson County, Tennessee. Alexander Claiborne was the administrator of his father's estate December 1833, signed by him and his brothers Thomas B. Claiborne and Algernon Sidney Claiborne. Alexander Claiborne married 1834 to widowed Elizabeth Ann Taylor Boyd, daughter of Martha Alexander and John Young Taylor. He was called "Cousin Alex" by his Taylor kinfolk, and was on the first Board of Tabernacle Church. He and Elizabeth Ann had five children before her death came one week after the death of her last infant daughter in 1848. Alexander Claiborne became ill while in Jackson County Arkansas visiting his newly married daughter and son-in-law Roena Alexander and Robert A. Green. His will was made there October 4, 1857 and he died October 20, 1857; the will was probated October 23,1857 in which he bequeathed each of his surviving children one-quarter of his estate. His body was returned home to Tabernacle for burial.
