A physician, lawyer, and politician for many years in Calvert county in a region known as 'Southern Maryland'. He once argued on the floor of the House of Delegates, the state of Maryland, as a delegate for Calvert county, for the extension of a pension that had been given to the late Gen. James Wilkinson to then be transferred to his widow.
Note: Gen. Wilkinson was born and raised in nearby Prince Frederick (also in Calvert county) and is today considered a war hero during the American Revolutionary War.
Taney's marker is located away from his plot in the cemetery because it had been broken off for unknown reasons many years ago.
He was, of course, known best for being the younger brother of Roger B. Taney, also born and raised in Calvert county on the family estate. For a brief period of a year or so, he served at the same time in the Maryland state government with his brother.
Just up the road a short distance is the site of what was the academy where Stephen Balch once taught classes and would use his charges to attack and harass the British during the American Revolution in the 1776 time period.
