Belle Watson Dies at 74
Burial Rites Here Friday for Former Missionary
Miss Belle Watson, widely known in Grays Harbor and for many years a missionary in China, died on Monday December 11, at Morton, Washington, following a long illness. She was 74 years old, and was a member of the pioneer Watson clan of this area.
Funeral services will be held at the Nowell-Hoerling mortuary, West Pine street, Centralia, at 11 o'clock this Friday. That afternoon, burial services will be held in the Wynooche cemetery in Montesano.
Miss Watson was born in Mitchell county, Kansas, in 1876, coming to this area in 1883. The family landed at Johns River and settled there for a period before moving to Montesano. Here she spend most of her early life. For 12 years she taught school in Montesano and then went to China as a missionary for the Church of God.
She was in China 20 years, and knew and loved the Chinese people In 1928, she was driven from her home by the Chinese Reds who even then were conducting guerrilla warfare in the heart of China. After a few years in the United States, she returned to her adopted country, retiring from active service there about 10 years ago.
She is survived by two brothers, Frank of Centralia and George O of Aberdeen; and by four sisters Mrs Emma Garner of Paulsbo, Mrs Carrie Holbourne of Tacoma, Mrs Louise Wilkie of Walnut Creek, Calif and Mrs Lettie Figge of Los Angeles. There are also many nieces, nephews and other relatives throughout the world.
