Author. She was born in Mainz by the name Netty Reiling. She studied History and Chinese in Heidelberg where she met Laszlo Radvanyi. She married him on August 10, 1925. In 1928 her first book "Aufstand der Fischer von St. Barbara" ("The Revolt of the Fishermen") was published under the pseudonym Anna Seghers. She joined the KPD (Communist Party of Germany). In 1933 she emigrated to Switzerland. From 1934 to 1940 she lived in Paris. In 1940 she fled with her children from Paris to Marseille. The family left Europe in March 1941 to live in Mexico City. In 1942 "Das siebte Kreuz" ("The Seventh Cross") was published and became a movie in 1945. In April 1947 she returned to Berlin. She was a founding member of the "Schriftstellerverband der DDR" (Union of Authors of the GDR) and the unions President from 1952 until 1978.
