For over thirty years, Padre Matteo was the official exorcist of the Archdiocese of Palermo. The author of numerous publications, La Grua died at the Sacro Cuore Convent of the Conventual Fathers in Piazza delle Noce, Palermo on Sunday, January 15, 2012, at 04.45 am., after suffering an acute respiratory crisis, only one month short of his 98th birthday. He was laid out in state at the hall of the named Convent and later at the Centro Gesù Liberatore, via Fondo Margifaraci. Requiem Mass, presided by Cardinal Paolo Romeo, was celebrated at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Palermo, on Tuesday, January 17, followed by interment at the Cimitero dei Cappuccini, in the chapel of the Conventual Fathers.
