Karolyn Jalayne Kells, Ph.D., R.N., 64, of Garden City, died Friday, Jan. 20, 2012, at Homestead Health and Rehabilitation, Garden City, Kan. The daughter of Russell Theodore and Rose Marie (Snavely) Kells, she was born Feb. 26, 1947, at Garden City, Kan.

She was an Associate Professor in the Department of Nursing at Fort Hays State University, coordinating the graduate nursing education track and Baccalaureate outreach delivery. Her awards included: Excellence in Nursing Education from the Nu Zeta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, and The Award of Excellence in Advising from Fort Hays State University. Karolyn was a member of the Bible Christian Church of Garden City, Society of Rogerian Scholars, American Nursing Association, Sigma Theta Tau, Phi Kappa Phi and a past member of North American Nursing Diagnosis Association. Karolyn's cats, Hot Stuff and Cool Dude, were great companions. She was an avid scrap booker, enjoyed traveling, singing, playing the piano, painting, ribbon embroidery and needlework. Her family was often delighted by her many talents.

Survivors include: her father, Russell Kells of Cimarron, Kan.; two brothers, Donald Kells and wife Linda of Dewey, Ariz., and Darcy Kells and wife Pam of Satanta, Kan.; sister, Kristi Cole and husband Jim of Satanta, Kan.; eight nephews and nieces; 12 great-nephews and nieces; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother on Nov. 1, 2002.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012, at Bible Christian Church, Garden City, with Pastor Darrin Hammond and Pastor Bob Bates presiding. Burial will be in the Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials may be made to Bible Christian Church music department, in care of Haskell County Funeral Home, PO Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.
