Name Johannes Lorentz in the St. Michael's and Zion Lutheran Church records in Philadelphia. He arrived in Philadelphia aboard the ship Edinburgh, on Sept. 5, 1748, out of Rotterdam, Holland. He was born with the surname Zeltner in Niederbuchsiten, Switzerland though his father was Jacobus Studer, as proven with DNA testing. His mother was Maria Zeltner, great granddaughter ot Adam Zeltner 1605-1653, beheaded leader of the Peasants' Revolt of 1653, in Solothurn. (as a Swiss hero the family retained the Zeltner name to honor Adam)
Johannes Lorentz married Catharina Hüss in 1755, in Philadelphia. She had also been on the ship Edinburgh in 1748, with her family.
He was a grocer in the 1785 Philadelphia city directory but later years as a "porter" and drayman who owned a wagon and two horses and transported goods in Philadelphia as found in the Philadelphia tax rolls.
John was a Private in the American Revolution in the 3d Battalion of the Philadelphia City Militia from 1777 until 1780. In 1781 he was in the 5th Battalion, and in 1784, a member of the 1st Battalion.
He died in the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1798. Buried originally in the Lutheran Cemetery located between Race & Vine and 8th & Franklin streets in Philadelphia.
