Jim was the 8th of 9 children of Robert and Jennie (McGrandle) Allingham, both of whom were Irish immigrants.

He was a 1939 graduate of Schenley High School, Pittsburgh, PA. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 29, 1942 and was assigned to the newly-formed U.S. Army Air Corps as an aircraft armorer during World War II. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal on December 20, 1945.

He married Dorothy Mary (Bejenkowski) Klavon on July 31, 1947 in Pittsburgh, PA.

They had one son:
1) James Michael Allingham (1948- ).

He adopted Dorothy's two daughters from her previous marriage. Both were given the Allingham surname:
1) Alice Marie Klavon Allingham (1940- ).
2) Mary Ann Klavon Allingham (1943- ).

He was a retired surveyor for St. Joe Lead Company, Monaca, PA.

A staunch Democrat, he served for many years as President of the Raccoon Township Democratic Club and was appointed to the Pennsylvania Democratic Committee. He was proud of the fact that, despite being the son of Irish Protestant immigrants, he actively campaigned for John F. Kennedy, the first Catholic to be elected President of the United States.

He was a co-founder of the Raccoon Township Boys Club; coached Little League, Pony League, and American Legion baseball teams; and served six years as Scoutmaster for Raccoon Township Cub Scout Troop 437. He was also active for many years with the United Fund (United Way) of Beaver County, PA.

He died of heart failure at age 65 at his home in Havre de Grace, Maryland. He died the first night after being released from the hospital for treatment of a heart attack.
