A dedicated, respected and righteous woman, educator, church member, community leader, and volunteer are among the many descriptors of Mrs. Verna Thompson Anderson, who tirelessly gave so much to so many. Following a lengthy illness resulting from a stroke, Mrs. Anderson was peacefully called by her Heavenly Father from her earthly life on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 in Gainesville, Virginia.
Born on April 6, 1926 in Gordonsville, Virginia, Verna was the seventh child born to the late Fred Webster and Alice Rebecca Terrell Thompson. At a very early age, she joined the church of her family, the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, which merged with Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in 1954 and became Union Baptist Church in Gordonsville. She was a Louisa County Training School alumnae and a graduate of St. Paul's College in Lawrenceville, Virginia, where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1948. She completed post-graduate studies at both the University of Virginia and Virginia State University. After 35 dedicated years as an elementary school teacher serving the students of both Fluvanna and Louisa County Public School Systems, she retired in 1983. On June 21, 1952, Verna Thompson married Charles Cornealious (Neal) Anderson at her parents' home in Gordonsville, Virginia. This loving union was blessed with a daughter, Vanessa. The couple built and lived in a home on the edge of the town of Gordonsville in "Thompson Village." Their home was in plain view of her parents' home and across the road from her brother, Cecil, and his family. She faithfully served as the Financial Secretary at Union Baptist prior to serving as Church Clerk for 30 years. Through the years, she served in the following capacities: Deaconess, Missionary Member, President of the Senior Choir, Mass Choir Member, Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Teacher, NAACP Scholarship Committee, UBC Educational Committee, and Secretary of the Willing Workers Ministry. In the community, Mrs. Anderson served as treasurer and a board member of the Gordonsville Christian Emergency Assistance Association.
She was also a member of numerous community organizations including the Orange County Branch of the NAACP, Church Women United, and the Louisa County Training School Alumnae Association. She was a founding member of the Woodberry Cemetery Association in Gordonsville, and a member for many years of the Monticello Chapter #43 Prince Hall Affiliation, Order of the Eastern Star of Virginia. Her professional memberships included the National Education Association, the Virginia Education Association, and the local education associations of Fluvanna and Louisa Counties. During her later post retirement years while she was able to travel between Gainesville and Gordonsville, she was also one of the two" Queen Moms" of the fabulous Red Hat Ladies of DeVille. She was usually among one of the first of the group to arrive and shared many happy times meeting, eating, and enjoying the numerous church and social activities in which the group participated. Her presence was always valued at the meetings and activities. Many referred to her as a woman of immense moral character as they observed Mrs. Anderson tirelessly perform her church duties and unselfishly give back to her community through numerous volunteer efforts.
She frequently visited those who were sick and/or shut-in. In her retirement years, she continued to enjoy gardening, canning, sewing, quilting, attending senior center activities, Precept Bible classes, and spending quality time with family and friends.
She and Neal, gardened, and frequently shared their produce with others. She mended clothing articles for others and shared her sewing talent with her granddaughters. She was a role model to many but especially for her two granddaughters who emulated her. She especially enjoyed spending quality time with them and passing along family traditions and moral values.
Mrs. Anderson was blessed to have a committed, live-in caregiver, Mrs. Casundra Boakye from Active Living Home Health Care of Northern Virginia who cared for her in Vanessa's and Emmett's home. She was also blessed to be cared for by nurses from Prince William Home Health Services; many caring personnel of Capital Caring Hospice in Manassas, Virginia; Dr. Jennifer Nau, Dr. Douglas Sigmon, other physicians and nurses from Gainesville Family Practice and the dedicated and helpful pharmacists at Rite-Aid Pharmacy in Gainesville, Virginia. Mrs. Anderson was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles (Neal), of 50 years in 2002; six brothers, Frederick Lawrence Thompson, Conliffe "Reginald" Thompson, Calvin Terrell Thompson, Charles Alexander Thompson, Cecil Daniel Thompson, Sr., Theodore Carl Thompson and one sister, Kathleen Marie Brewer. She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted daughter Vanessa Anderson Smith and son-in-law, Emmett, of Gainesville, Virginia; two grandchildren, Lauren and Kristen Smith; one sister, Dolores Alexander, and her husband William of Capital Heights, Maryland; one brother-in-law, Prince Jones of Albany, Georgia, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
