When the civil war broke out, Steven enlisted with the NC 27th Infantry, rising to the rank of Corporal. Within 4 months of his enlistment, he was discharged in order to serve as Clerk of Court in Wayne County, having just won the election.
During the war, on March 3, 1862, he married Susan Winifred Pipkin of Lenoir County. The couple settled in Goldsboro, NC and would become parents of two sons.
S. H. Denmark died at age 57 of unknown causes. He was survived by his wife and both sons.
His obituary appeared in the Goldsboro Weekly Argus on February 13, 1898 (attached to memorial) and excerpted below.
"At outbreak of the war he enlisted in the Goldsboro Rifles, and went forth to do battle for the Southern cause. While yet in the field he was called home to serve his people in another capacity, having been elected clerk of the old County Court. This position he filled to the satisfaction of all for four years -- until the system itself was abolished ... For years he filled the responsible and exacting position of book-keeper for the hardware firm of Smith & Yelverton, of this city, up to the time of his late sickness...although Mr. Denmark had been ill for some weeks, and his physicians feared the worst, it was not 'till Saturday evening that hope was abandoned...Mr. Denmark, with his beloved wife, was a member of the Goldsboro Baptist Church, from which his funeral will be held to-morrow morning..."
