Leo VI married Eudokia in the Spring of 900.His previous two wives had predeceased him. He had three daughters born in the previous marriages but no son. Leo wanted to secure his succession by this marriage. The marriage was technically illegal under Byzantine law and against the practices of the Eastern Orthodox Church at the time. Leo VI had to seek permission by Ecumenical Patriarch Antony II of Constantinople. A year later Eudokia died while giving birth to a son named Basil, who survived long enough to be named.
Eudokia was buried in Church of the Holy Apostles along with her husband Leo and his first wife Theophano and second wife Zoe.
