He was born on April 29, 1924 in Preston, Franklin County, Idaho to Verl David Smart and Rosella Hannah Hyde. Sweet and beloved father of three, grandfather of 11, and great-grandfather of 14.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Edith Ann (Nielson) Smart; sisters, Glenda and LuJean; brothers, Marlow and Boyd; son, Tim; and grandson, Damon.
De was a veteran of the United States Navy and served during World War II. He retired from Kennecott Copper after 20 years of service.
His lifetime saw much service to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a young man he served an Aaronic Priesthood Leadership. As he was raising his family, he served as ward financial clerk, executive secretary, stake clerk, and home teacher. After retiring, he served a mission with Edith to the California San Bernardino Mission from 1987-1989 and filled a church service mission for Deseret Industries in 1990.
He is survived by his daughter, Connie (Patrick), son Raymond (Trudee), and many loving family members, friends, and neighbors.
He enjoyed carpentry, gardening, traveling, camping, reading, and just sitting in his chair by the front window. He loved animals and telling stories. He will be fondly remembered for his grizzly bear hugs, scruffy kisses, optimistic personality, cookies in the jar, and candy in his pockets for the grandkids.
Graveside services will be held at 12:00 NOON, Thursday, February 2, 2012 at the Valley View Cemetery in West Valley City, Utah.
