Professional Boxing Figure. He was instrumental in shaping the career of former World Middleweight Champion Marvin Hagler, among other accomplished fighters and was honored by the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Born Guerino Petronelli, he grew up a close friend of the legendary Rocky Marciano and enjoyed a successful amateur boxing career while serving with the United States Navy (he served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars). Following his return home, he opened and co-operated a gym with his older brother Pat. In 1969, a young Marvin Hagler would be discovered working out at their proprietorship and under Goody Petronelli's guidance as his corner-man and trainer (with Pat serving as fight negotiator) nearly two decades of greatness was about to unfold. With Goody at his side, Hagler went onto amass a 62 win (52 knockout), 3 loss and 2 draw record which included historic bouts with Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard. In 1983, his contributions to boxing were acknowledged when he co-shared (with his brother) the Al Buck Award for Manager of the Year from the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Following Hagler's retirement in 1987, Petronelli undertook the careers of Robbie Sims, Kevin McBride and Peter McNeeley (son of former heavyweight contender Tom McNeeley) all of who competed for world championship titles.
