Ray Elrod, 84, of 408 E. 18th died Tuesday at a Central City hospital. Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Gollaher Chapel in Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Thomas Yackley will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 3-9 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Litzenberg Hospital Long-Term Care Wing in Central City.
Mr. Elrod was born March 1, 1894, in York County, the son of Fant and Rose Ann Elrod. He received his education and grew up in York County. On Dec. 21, 1921, he married Adele Bichel in Sherman County. They farmed in the Litchfield area. In 1936 they moved to Loup City and in 1942 they came to Grand Island. Mr. Elrod went to work for the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant and later worked for the J.C. Penny Co., retiring in 1959. Mr. Elrod was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Odd Fellows Lodge and Eagles Aerie No. 378.
Survivors include five sons, Thomas R. Garner of Grand Island, Arthur "Donald" Elrod of Omaha, Larry "Ron" Elrod and Homer Elrod, both of Grand Island, and Earl Elrod of Parker, Ariz.; two daughters, Mrs. Bernard (Bernice) Crist of Grand Island; 17 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Kate Hawley of Hazard. He was preceded in death by two sons, Marvin and Lyle, four brothers and a sister.
