Virginia was a Native American, the daughter of Joe and Martha Aleck. Probably born near Hood River where they lived.

She, along with her two brothers were with their mother brings their winter fish supply from White Salmon in a boat, when a river boat swamped them. Virginia was unable to swim and her mother attempted in vain to save her. When help arrived and the family was brought to shore little Virginia could not be revived. She was a Native American born on the Oregon side of the Columbia River. She was very small when she drown. Her father, Joe Alick carried the mail across the Columbia to the Washington side in his large boat. In the fall of that particular year her mother, Martha Alick, went over to prepare fish for their winter use. Virginia's father said that after he made his mail run he would bring his boat to haul the fish home. Martha was a very hard working woman and as she had a small boat of her own, she set out with the fish, her three children, George, Virginia and Fred on her own. The boat was heavily overloaded and while on the river the sternwheeler " The Dalles" passed, swamping the boat. George was old enough he was a good swimmer, but little Virginia and Fred could not. Their mother tried desperately to tread water and keep their little heads above the water until a boat picked them up some fifteen minutes later. However, little Virginia was lifeless.
