Thomas and Catherine McAdams emigrated from Belfast, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, on 24 December 1766, bound for South Carolina aboard the ship "Earl of Hillsborough". Thomas was not to see the land of opportunity nor experience the freedom he sought for his young family -- he died of measles during the voyage and was buried at sea. Catherine and three young children arrived in Charleston in February 1767 and settled in the frontier wilderness of South Carolina. From this tenuous beginning Catherine nourished the development of a family that has flourished in America for over 250 years.
