Born in the District of Camlachie in the Burgh of Glasgow.

He was a member of the Canadian Expeditionary Force known as "The Ladies From Hell". He served in the 72nd Battallion in France. He was discharged June 19, 1917 at age 20.

Became a Naturalized US Citizen October 31, 1927 in Boston (Jamaica Plain) at the age of 28. He was 5' 3" tall.
